Why electric vehicles are called the future of mobility?

In the last few years, various initiatives have been initiated to create awareness among the Indian population regarding the disastrous and long-term negative impact of air pollution produced by diesel and petrol vehicles. The urgency of a clean and energy-efficient alternative solution is increasing each day as the situation of air quality in India is worsening.

Considering this the Indian government in 2015, took an initiative as the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan part, known as Faster Adoption and Manufacture of Electric Vehicles (FAME) to amplify the adoption of the electric vehicle.

The international market of EVs is flourishing incessantly at a CAGR (compound annualised growth rate) of 21.7%/ the global market is expected to grow further from 8.1m units to around 39.21m units by the year 2030. There are several reasons behind this aggressive growth is including pollution concerns.

Along with the global market, the Indian EV market is also growing extensively because of the constant support from the government. The automobile industry in India stands strong at the fifth largest position worldwide and is expected to soon reach the second position by 2030. According to IESA (Indian Energy Storage Alliance), the Indian automobile industry is expected to flourish at a 36% CAGR.

India is a developing country where the majority of the population falls under the middle-class bracket therefore, two-wheelers are used commonly as they are relatively affordable and are convenient to use for daily commuting in traffic. The constant effort of the government to uphold electric vehicles over petrol-powered ones has increased sales of electric scooters. There are several advantages of electric scooters which have inflated their sales. According to Plug in India, as of September 2022, the sales of electric two-wheeler have witnessed a notable rise of 206% due to enhanced public awareness as well as an incredible consumer choice in every segment.

There are several reasons why electric vehicles are called the future of mobility. Let’s discuss

A better choice for the environment

Conventional petrol-powered vehicles are one of the top contributors to air pollution and climate change throughout the world. The carbon emissions produced by traditional vehicles not only negatively impact the environment but are also hazardous to public health. As per studies, humans have approximately only 8 years to effectively alter the ways of energy usage before it is too late!

One of the advantages of using electric scooters over petrol ones is that they comprise battery packs and electric motors, which don’t produce any kind of exhaust fumes. This means riding an electric scooter or any vehicle will not contribute towards the ever-decreasing air quality. Electric vehicles when compared with petrol-powered cars, produce much low greenhouse emissions, proving to be clean and sustainable.

One electric vehicle can save around 1.5m grams of carbon dioxide on average which is equivalent to four times taking flights back and forth from Delhi to Mumbai.

Cost saving

Cost savings is another major advantage of electric scooter. According to the latest records, on average Indians spends around 17% of their income on petrol/diesel. This staggering expenditure can be omitted by simply switching to electric vehicles as these only require battery charging to operate. Cost-effectiveness is one of the advantages of electric scooters and bikes which can be charged in the comfort of homes. The running cost of Maruthisan is 15p/km which is a lot less and more convenient than the petrol expenses.

Solves the issue of noise pollution

Fuel-powered vehicles and traffic are byproducts of major noise pollution in the country. With time we have grown accustomed to blazing noise pollution caused due to loud exhausts, engines and shrill brakes. World Health Organisation stated that it is because of noise pollution, problems like tiredness, stress, headaches, sleep issue, increased heart disease risks and high BP (blood pressure) have surfaced.

Electric vehicles, on the other hand, draw power through batteries (via silent electric charge). The only sounds emitted by electric vehicles are of the wheels against wind resistance and roads while driving.

Government support

The government of the nation understands the urgency of clean and sustainable energy. Several campaigns and initiatives are launched to promote the adoption of EVs because of this. ‘Go Electric’ and ‘Switch Delhi’ are some of the electric awareness campaigns launched by the government.

The NITI Aayog aims to achieve 70% of sales penetration for all commercial vehicles, 40% for buses, 30% for private vehicles and 880% for three and two-wheelers by the year 2030. All these are initiated to achieve the goal of net 0 carbon emissions by the year 2070.

Recently, the Indian government has revised the FAME II scheme and offered previous subsidies double, accounting for a total of 15000kWh incentive for two-wheelers. Such will help enhance the demand for EVs in the market. Therefore, among the advantages of electric scooters, government support plays a key role.

Convenience

Convenience is one of the greatest advantages of electric scooters. By switching to electric vehicles one can be worrying about petrol money as well as will not require waiting in the long queue at gas stations. Electric vehicles provide one of the most convenient and comfortable driving experiences.

Technology

Eminent industry players have accelerated automotive technological innovations speed by introducing new and advanced concepts of connected, shared, autonomous and electric mobility. The industry was successful in achieving over $400Bn investments in the last decades and approximately $100Bn are coming since 2020’s beginning. One of the advantages of an electric scooter is you ride an advanced technology.

Electric is definitely the future! According to several motorists, the future of electric vehicles is the most promising as with time more and more people are switching to electric two-wheelers and cars for daily commuting purposes. The general awareness of EVs is increasing and successively becoming evident to be a superior transportation choice in every possible way. The advantages of electric scooters and cars are undeniable.
